This presentation will cover asphalt crack sealing concepts as developed by Minnesota DOT studies. The presentation will cover the following areas:

  • Past studies and research by MnDOT on crack sealing
  • Mitigating reflective cracking
  • Philosophy of crack sealing
  • Thermal cracking concepts regarding PG graded asphalt
  • Methodology and workmanship of crack sealing
  • Materials considerations

Speaker(s)

Tom Wood is with the Minnesota Department of Transportation, where he works on pavement preventative maintenance methods with the Office of Materials. He also has worked for Koch Materials Company and SemMaterials Group as a technical representative specializing in surface treatments for hot-mix asphalt pavements.

Target Audience

District and regional maintenance coordinators, general maintenance staff and local road superintendents and city public works/streets maintenance coordinators.
