This presentation will discuss the types and applications of commonly used erosion control products. The various methods used for designing and analyzing the performance of erosion control options in use on slopes and channels will also be discussed.

Topics covered in this presentation include:

  • Erosion control options including mulches, hydraulically applied erosion control products (HECPs) and rolled erosion control products (RECPs)
  • Application of erosion control options on areas such as slopes and channels
  • Design considerations
  • Performance of erosion control options

After completion of the presentation attendees should be able to:

  • Identify erosion control products and their application
  • Select the appropriate erosion control options for slope protection and channel linings
  • Evaluate the performance of erosion control options


Matthew L. Stone, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Construction Management & Engineering at North Dakota State University. While working on his doctorate at the University of Alabama, Dr. Stone took courses related to planning and designing construction site erosion and sediment controls. He also worked on campus stormwater projects in the university’s Construction Administration Office and in the Bridge Inspection Department at the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
