This presentation will give a general overview on human factors relating to lighting, safety benefits of lighting, design methods, state of the practice in materials specifying, and construction inspection. This presentation is not intended to create expert lighting designers but to expose staff to the general concepts in order to enhance conversations between generalists and experts. The insights from this presentation will also assist those who write RFPs to solicit lighting design services.

Viewers will be presented the following topics:

  • Safety benefits of roadway lighting
  • Human factors – vision, contrast, health issues, etc.
  • Fundamental concepts of light
  • Planning and design process
    • General concepts for calculations
