Description

Sustainable design seeks to reduce negative impacts on the environment, and the health and comfort of building occupants, thereby improving building performance. The basic objectives of sustainability are to reduce consumption of non-renewable resources, minimize waste, and create healthy, productive environments.

While this philosophy applies to mostly vertical construction, there are tools and resources that will aid in the decision-making process for horizontal construction as well. Utilizing a sustainable design philosophy encourages decisions at each phase of the design process that will reduce negative impacts on the environment, without compromising the bottom line. This presentation will focus on border crossing projects that are applicable in the building of public facilities, such as rest areas, maintenance shops, salt sheds, visitor centers, etc.
