Description

This presentation will discuss the importance of bridge deck preservation and include topics such as deck flushing, deck and crack sealing, and the timely application of various types of overlays. It will also identify common deck deficiencies and introduce the process of hydrodemolition for surface preparation for selective removal of concrete ahead of dense concrete overlay installations. The intent of the session is to provide the user an overall strategy for effective and efficient preservation to extend bridge deck life.

Speaker(s)

Patrick Martens is a registered professional engineer in the state of Missouri. He graduated from The University of Missouri - Rolla (now Missouri Science and Technology). He worked for over 30 years with the Missouri Department of Transportation, in areas of bridge construction, bridge inspection and bridge maintenance. For the last 8 ½ years he has been working as an independent consultant, for Bridge Preservation and Inspection Services, in Jefferson City, Missouri. His focus has been on bridge deck preservation treatments with a primary emphasis on implementing hydrodemolition technology and installation of Latex Modified Concrete overlays for bridge decks. He has been married to his wife Amy for 37 years and has three children and three grandchildren.
