This presentation covers basic surveying practices and procedures used by field staff in construction surveys. Topics will include slope staking, blue topping, paving hubs, typical survey math, rod and level concepts, understanding and use of datums, etc. This presentation will provide suggestions as to reduction of errors in common procedures and best practices to ensure quality, accuracy and precision.


Brian Fuder is the engineering training manager for Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute (UGPTI) at North Dakota State University. Prior to joining UGPTI, Brian served as associate professor of Land Surveying and Civil Engineering Technology at North Dakota State College of Science (NDSCS) in Wahpeton, ND. Prior to NDSCS, he worked at MnDOT in construction inspection and maintenance. Fuder currently teaches the NDDOT construction project management certification course for inspectors and their associated consultants.
