This presentation will cover the fundamentals of how to inspect surface preparation and application of protective coatings on bridge steel. These fundamentals are applicable to those who inspect coating work both in the shop and in the field. The presentation will cover situations that affect inspection in the field (e.g. containment, field safety hazards, changing weather conditions), as well as the fundamental inspection skills required to inspect bridge steel painted in the shop, in the field or maintenance. Items to be covered include roles and responsibilities, inspection and environmental safety, preparation prior to beginning work, surface preparation, coating types and characteristics, coating inspection and defects, and common inspection tools, tips and tricks.


Joe Berish, SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings Certification Program Manager. Joe is a Protective Coatings Inspector and Bridge Coatings Inspector training instructor and technical resource for coatings courses. Mr. Berish holds widely recognized certifications in the coatings industry: SSPC Protective Coatings Specialist (PCS), Master Coatings Inspector (MCI) Concrete Coatings Inspector (CCI), Bridge Coatings Inspector Level 2 (BCI) and the NACE Coatings Inspector Program Level 3(CIP) peer. Additionally he is a member of the following industry organizations: SSPC, National Shipbuilding Research Panel (NSRP), NACE, ASTM, Association of Railway Engineers and Maintenance Right of Way (AREMA).

Mr. Berish is a graduate of California University of PA and US Army combat veteran. Joe has been with SSPC since 2013. Prior to working with SSPC, Joe worked for Greenman-Pederson Incorporated as a senior manager in charge of many coatings projects. Prior to that, he was the senior coatings inspector with KTA-Tator, Inc.
