Description
An important tool for identifying and reducing hazards in any industry; a job hazard analysis (JHA), also called a job safety analysis (JSA), is a technique to identify the dangers of specific tasks in order to reduce the risk of injury to workers. This presentation will discuss the following items:
- Regulatory driver—OSHA’s requirements for a safe workplace and programs/policies/ procedures
- Managing risk—injury cost to employers, human error and behavior, employer defense, fun examples
- JSA/JHA:
- Purpose—hierarchy of controls, stop work authority
- When needed and where used
- Who prepares them
- Difference between JSA and: FLHA, pre-task planning, tool box talks, etc.
- Continual improvement/evaluation—the “plan-do-check-act” process
- Constructing—"how-to” and templates, safety committees, front-line worker involvement, peer-review.

Dan Hannan, CSP, Director of Environmental, Health and Safety at Hilmerson Safety Services, Inc. based in Savage, Minnesota. Dan has nearly three decades of environmental, health and safety subject matter expertise and experience. Dan is a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), a designation awarded through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, as well as an OSHA-Authorized Outreach Trainer. Dan’s professional safety career began in 1990 in the public sector working for the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA). Over the last 27 years Dan has provided professional EHS services to the oil and gas, construction, manufacturing, and ethanol industries. His work has included project safety management, compliance auditing, risk assessment, training and program development.Target Audience
