Description

This presentation will cover a high-level overview of asphalt mixtures and the paving process. Topics covered will include how do asphalt mixtures fail, how are they designed, and how are they produced/placed. This presentation will serve as a great refresher for seasoned personnel as well as a great intro to newer staff. Those involved in planning, scoping, design and other areas not heavily involved in the field will gain some good insight and knowledge from this presentation.

Derek Nener-Plante joined FHWA in 2020 as a Pavement and Materials Engineer for the Resource Center's Pavement and Materials (P&M) Team. He is responsible for leading implementation and deployment efforts in the areas of asphalt materials, asphalt pavement construction, materials and construction specifications, and quality assurance. Derek delivers many asphalt-related programs for FHWA including Balanced Mix Design and assisting the Mobile Asphalt Technology Center. Prior to joining FHWA he worked at MaineDOT for nearly ten years where he was the State Asphalt Pavement Engineer. He received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Maine and Master's from the University of Connecticut. When not thinking about asphalt, Derek enjoys spending time with his three children, rooting for Boston sports teams, and golfing.
