Roadway foundations are the backbone of safe, durable, and long-lasting road systems. A properly designed foundation distributes loads evenly, prevents cracking and settlement, and supports the road's surface layer through heavy traffic and varying weather conditions. By investing in strong foundations, we extend the lifespan of roadways, reduce maintenance costs, and ensure safer, smoother transportation for the public.

This presentation explores the critical components of roadway foundations, the impact of soil stability, and the role of innovative materials and construction techniques in building resilient infrastructure.

Scott Whaley, PE. Scott has 12 years of experience in design and construction with geogrid, including mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls and reinforced slopes; soft subgrade stabilization; pavements; unpaved roads and working surfaces; and railbeds. He has contributed to the design and construction of projects throughout the United States, and he currently serves as the Tensar Regional Manager for Alaska, Montana, and North Dakota. Scott holds a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of Florida and is a registered civil engineer in Georgia. Scott resides in Mandan, North Dakota.
