Why You Should Attend

In our industry, we have various professionals we interact with on a regular basis. Whether it be co-workers, customers, clients or stakeholders, we need to effectively communicate with them. Often, engineers and technicians are easily misunderstood due to technical jargon, too much detail, or the fear of public speaking. This presentation is intended to provide some useful tools and understanding to help improve our communication skills. In this presentation, participants will learn a variety of skills to include:

  • Why listening skills are an important aspect of communication
  • Develop more awareness of essential nonverbal communication
  • Communicate more effectively with coworkers, other professionals
  • Improve online communication to reduce clutter and improve efficiency
  • Expand your public speaking skills

About the Presenter

Shoots Veis, PE, has been a Professional Engineer in Montana, North Dakota and Wyoming for over 20 years. He is an experienced and engaging public speaker, having given hundreds of public presentations at professional conferences, college courses, public meetings, TEDxBillings and service clubs. Shoots served a five-year term on the Billings, MT city council, where he took an interest in infrastructure, finance, and public speaking by engineers. His time on the council prompted him to write Public Speaking for Engineers: Communicating Effectively with Clients, the Public, and Local Government. He spent several years appearing as an actor in dozens of productions at Billings Studio Theatre and hosts the Your County, Your City, and Your Schools programs on Community 7 Television.
